District 8 AALAS Workshop Information

On-Site Workshops Offered:

Security Awareness Workshop
This course provides exercises and lot's of anecdotal examples of tactics used in the past by Animal Rights groups in relation to the environment (why there is an issue), Security systems (how systems can help respond to the environment), Issues relating to risks to facilities and communications (current and past AR tactics) and People issues (infiltrator tactics and the development of practical awareness measures that individuals can take).  This course also includes the demonstration of a spy pen.

Security in Recruitment Workshop
This course concentrates on preventing infiltration from advertising the vacancy, reviewing applications and CVs, interviewing and finally through spotting an infiltrator.  We have profiled 13 of the most prominent infiltrations and use actual infiltration materials as exercises to reinforce the messages.  We use the 3-stage process to walk attendees through the issues of recruitment, background screening and awareness once employed.  The course materials include a complete set of key learning points.

From Technician to Manager
Congratulations You are Now a Manager!
This workshop combines a sprinkling of management theory with a smidgen of management practice and a whole lot of experiential learning.  Topics to be discussed include everything from Why Would Anyone Want to Be a Manager? to Conducting Effective Performance Appraisals with a lot of ifs, ands, and buts in between.  We will explore employee recruitment, hiring and firing, absenteeism, motivation, goal setting and evaluation, dealing with sensitive issues (like BO), harassment, teamwork just about everything except legal issues you need a lawyer for that. There will be some lecture, a few real life decision making exercises, take home handouts, many questions; and, hopefully, solid answers about the day to day events in the life of one who manages people. I cant promise you will be a better manager after this workshop; however, Im pretty sure you will not fall asleep!

Developing an AALAS Training Program
This workshop will focus on how to develop and implement an in-house training program to effectively prepare candidates for the three AALAS technician certification exams (ALAT, LAT, and LATG). The workshop will cover the specifics of setting up a program to include PowerPoint presentations, quizzes and exams for all three levels using samples of three formats to help the trainer to train. Additionally, motivational tools will be presented to help fully engage candidates.

Improving Employee Motivation and Productivity
A major factor determining an organizations success is the quality of its employees performance. Performance is enhanced when employees feel satisfied and motivated. This workshop will show managers how to motivate employees. Emphasis will be on recognizing that each employee is unique and must be motivated in a particular way. Methods will be described to help managers identify each employees specific needs, and then, how to use that knowledge to enhance his/her performance.

Off-Site Workshops Offered:

Anesthesia Its a Gas
"This workshop will feature a comprehensive discussion of inhalant anesthesia systems including oxygen and/or ancillary carrier gas issues, capabilities and limitations of vaporizers, and intricacies of appliances used to administer inhalant anesthetics.  Also covered will be care, cleaning, maintenance, and self-test aspects of the system.  Two-thirds of the session will be didactic; one-third of the session will be devoted to hands-on handling and techniques for subject animal induction and maintenance. In addition, current thinking with respect to issues related to inhalant anesthetics waste gas management, and OSHA considerations will be discussed.  The hands on portion will allow participants to use inhalant anesthesia; and will give them an opportunity to learn one technique for intubating rats."

Rabbit Techniques for Beginners
This workshop will be a hands-on wet lab that will provide training in many rabbit techniques. We will have highly skilled instructors to assist you in learning correct procedures in rabbits including handling and restraint methods, drug administration procedures  (SQ, IM, PO, ID, and IV), blood collection procedures (marginal ear vein, auricular artery and, jugular vein) as well as intubation techniques.

Rodent Necropsy Workshop
This workshop will assist you in learning correct necropsy techniques in rodents including step-by-step instruction, organ identification, collection, and fixation techniques. The object is to present a systematic approach to routine dissection and examination of rodents for the purpose of identifying obvious abnormalities and for collecting tissues.

Rodent Cannulation Surgery Workshop
This hands-on workshop will concentrate on surgical cannulation procedures in rats. It is frequently necessary to catheterize blood vessels in order to administer substances or withdraw blood samples over a prolonged period of time, or to make direct blood pressure recordings. In most cases the catheter will need to be exteriorized and protected from the attention of the animal. Most blood vessels, which are not too small and are reasonably accessible, can be catheterized. This workshop will give detailed instruction in catheterization of the jugular vein, carotid artery, and femoral blood vessels.
* Please note that prior surgical experience is required to attend this workshop.

Call for Posters

Calling all animal technicians, husbandry and cage wash staff, researchers, animal facility managers and veterinarians!  Have you developed a new technique to improve a surgical procedure?  Have you or someone on your staff come up with a unique way of doing something routine?  What is your facility doing about environmental enrichment?  How do you motivate and retain your workers?  Do you have a staff training program? Do you have a new facility? Has your facility implemented any cost-savings measures?  Do you have a new animal model?  How is Occupational Health and Safety handled at your facility?

What do all these topics have in common? They all would make good poster presentations.  The San Diego Branch of AALAS invites you to share your knowledge, ideas and animal research projects by presenting a poster at the AALAS District 8 Meeting, to be held in San Diego on April 12-13, 2007.

It’s not too early to start working on your poster.  Topics can range from husbandry to management to research.

Don’t think your boss will let you attend the meeting?  Let him or her know you want to submit a poster to the meeting.

Never made a poster before?  No sweat.  Click on or go to the following link and get started.
http://www.aalas.org/doc/poster-guidelines.doc

Deadline to submit your poster abstract is March 23, 2007.
