JOB PURPOSE: This individual will be able to utilize the following areas of expertise including veterinary internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, pathology, and more.  Using their knowledge of comparative medicine and physiology, this individual will be instrumental in the development of many innovative animal models for pre-clinical evaluation of medical devices and pharmaceuticals. This includes models for wound healing, surgical implantation, orthopedics, neurology, ophthalmology, and many other models in a variety of species, from small rodents, such as mice, to larger species, including sheep and swine.  This individual will have the ability to launch and development new programs in support of safety pharmacology and drug discovery, advising on model development and comparative physiology and development of telemetry device methodology in multiple species.  This individual will serve as Study Director for numerous studies (both GLP and non-GLP studies), specializing in studies using surgical models or requiring more extensive model development, and will serve as a member of the facility IACUC. This individual will also be responsible for the direction and oversight of the entire animal care program at the Biological Test Center, including occupational health matters, and assurance of compliance with USDA, DEA, FDA, AAALAC, and NIH regulations. 

This position offers the opportunity to work directly with experts in the field including board certified veterinary ophthalmologists, interventional specialists, surgeons, and many others. Involvement in ACLAM and AALAS are encouraged.

DESCRIPTION:
Incumbent will work under the direction of the Animal Care Program Animal Resources Supervisor. The incumbent is responsible for the physical environment for a group of assigned laboratory animals. Performs routine animal health related tasks. Performs basic animal husbandry, assists with rodent colony maintenance (breeding, weaning, etc.). Operates computer terminal. Maintains records on animal deliveries. Flexibility to adjust work schedule to accommodate varying work loads. Ability to work weekends, holidays and overtime.

QUALIFICATIONS:
* Skill to operate and maintain mechanical equipment, autoclaves, cagewashers, vehicles, janitorial equipment (i.e. floor scrubbers).
* Strong organizational skills in performing assigned tasks.
* Ability to learn and apply principles of sanitizing and disinfecting.

FUNCTION/SCOPE:
This position assumes responsibility for the planning, direction and execution of ADME, safety and toxicology studies to support compounds in development.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Requires DVM or Ph.D. in pharmacology or toxicology with 5-10 plus years industry experience preferably in oncology. Experience with PK, ADME, safety and toxicology studies, and the understanding of small molecule drugs is essential. Experience in bioanalytical methods development would be advantageous. Previous experience in writing portions of INDs, is also preferred. Must have participated in drug development project teams, have previous experience with multi-functional preclinical research teams and have had extensive experience in working with CROs.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain current broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and agency regulations in the designated field of responsibility.
Ensure communications and awareness of supervisor of ongoing studies and progress

Position Objective:  Assist in designing and execute experiments to support ongoing contracted research efforts in the Oncology, Pharmacology and Toxicology fields.  Will participate in animal and pharmacokinetic studies and support the overall lab operation.

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in animal physiology or related field, or the equivalent knowledge and experience.  Must have 2+ years of significant animal surgery and animal handling experience including all routes of dosing and blood/fluid collection.  AALAS certification and experience in pharmacological research/drug discovery, in-vivo techniques, data acquisition and analysis, animal behavior monitoring, compound formulation, drug administration and biological samples collection preferred.  Must be detail oriented, have strong communication and multi-tasking skills and have the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.  Must be proficient in MS Excel/Word/Powerpoint.
